Activate an iOS device

Before you begin

  • Get an Apple certificate and register it with BES10 Cloud. Follow the instructions in Getting ready to manage iOS devices.
  • When you follow the instructions below, you will create a user account for the device user. You can either create the user account by typing the user's information (this is a "local user"), or you can add the user account from your company directory, for example, from Microsoft Active Directory (this is a "directory user"). If you want to add users from the company directory, you must first follow the instructions in Accessing your company directory.

Create an Exchange ActiveSync profile

An Exchange ActiveSync profile allows devices to connect to the mail server and synchronize email and organizer data. Do one of the following:
  • Use an Exchange ActiveSync profile that has already been set up.
  • Follow the steps below to create a new profile.

  1. On the menu bar, click Policies and Profiles.
  2. Click the + icon beside Exchange ActiveSync.
  3. Type a name and description for the profile.
  4. In the Domain name field, type the domain name of the mail server.
  5. In the Email address field, type %UserEmailAddress%.
  6. In the Host name or IP address field, type the host name or IP address of the Exchange ActiveSync server.
  7. If the mail server requires SSL authentication, select Use SSL.
  8. In the Username field, type %UserName%. If your organization uses IBM Notes Traveler, type %UserDisplayName% instead.
  9. Click the tab for each device type and configure the appropriate values.
  10. Click Add.

Optional: Customize activation options

At the end of this process, users receive an email with an activation password. You can use the default activation settings, or you can customize the settings to suit your organization’s needs:

Create a user account

Every device user needs a user account on BES10 Cloud. Do one of the following:
  • If the device user already has a user account, follow the instructions in Send an activation email message.
  • If the device user doesn’t have a user account, follow these steps to create one and send an activation password to the user.

  1. On the menu bar, click Users and Devices.
  2. Click the + icon beside All users.
  3. Perform one of the following actions:

    If...

    BES10 Cloud is connected to your company directory (for example, Microsoft Active Directory or an LDAP directory)
    1. On the Company directory tab, search for and select a user.

    BES10 Cloud is not connected to your company directory
    1. On the Local tab, type the required information.
    2. In the Console password field, type a password the user can use to log in to BES10 Self-Service.
  4. Select Auto-generate device activation password and send email with activation instructions.
  5. Click Save.

Assign the Exchange ActiveSync profile to the user

Assign the Exchange ActiveSync profile to the user so that the user’s device can connect to the mail server.

  1. On the menu bar, click Users & Devices.
  2. Search for and select the user.
  3. On the User summary tab, in the IT policies and profiles section, click the + icon.
  4. Click Exchange ActiveSync.
  5. In the drop-down list, click the name of the profile.
  6. Click Assign.

User activates an iOS device

By default, BES10 Cloud sends the user an email with activation information and a second email with an activation password. To guide the user through the activation process, you can send the following instructions.

  1. Download and install the BES10 Client from the App Store.
  2. Open the BES10 Client.
  3. Read and accept the agreement.
  4. Type your work email address and tap Go.
  5. If required, type the server address and tap Next.
  6. Confirm the certificate details. Tap Accept.
  7. Type your username and activation password. Tap Activate My Device.
  8. Tap OK to install the certificate.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the activation.
After you finish:
  • Open the BES10 Client and tap About. In the Activated Device section, you should see your device information.
  • As long as your activation password is valid, you can repeat these steps to activate additional devices (if allowed by the administrator).
